Discharged From An NHS Diabetes Clinic

I am delighted to share the testimonial below, of one of my clients that was discharged from an NHS diabetes clinic.


I  am  forty-­‐something,  male  and  have  type  2  Diabetes  which  was  diagnosed  in  October  2003.  I  was  taking  oral  medications  only  until  2012  when  I  was  put  on  Insulin.

I  started  consulting  Heba from Bath Nutrition & Wellness Centre over  a  year  ago  to  help  me  get  a  good  grip  with  my  nutrition.    Before  I  met  her,  I  had  some  weight  problems,  was  lethargic  and  regularly  in  some  sort  of  depressive  moods  which  also  affected  the  way  I  related  to  my  family  at  home.  There  were  certain  types  of  food  I  either  considered  as  too  luxurious  and  felt  guilty  to  consume  more  of,  or  considered  too  expensive  and  would  not  buy  regularly.  These  were  mainly  animal  protein  products  and  soya  based  products.  There  were  other  foods  I  thought  I  needed  more  of  to  keep  my  sugar  level  balanced  as  they  had  been  confirmed  for  me  by  two  separate  NHS  Dieticians  as  “very  appropriate”.  These  were  mainly  carbohydrate-­‐based  products  including  of  course  salads,  cereals,  oats,  carrots  etc.

Consulting  with  Heba  changed  my  mindset  about  these  foods  and  my  readiness  to  spend  on  them.  Not  only  did  she  help  me  deconstruct  my  thoughts  about  the  foods  above,  she  also  drew  a  parallel  between  my  inner  being  (my  health)  and  my  outer  being  (my  material  life).  She  said,  how  much  do  you  spend  on  your  clothes,  your  home  etc  to  look  good?  And  how  much  do  you  spend  on  or  care  for  your  health  to  live  good?  It  was  hard  to  accept  her  combination  of  nutritional  advice  and  personal  friendly  counselling  initially.  But  she  soon  won  my  trust.  She  also  assured  me  that  I  did  not  need  to  take  a  huge  leap  but  just  small  steps.  So  I  begun  with  her  help  to  change  my  diet,  incorporate  food  supplements,  and  cut  my  carbohydrate  intake  as  well  as  increase  my  protein-­‐based  foods.  On  one  occasion,  I  actually  phoned  her  whilst  I  was  at  the  grocery  shop  just  so  she  can  guide  me  through  what  to  buy  and  take  home  to  cook.

In  less  than  three  months  during  when  the  consultation,  begun,  I  started  to  feel  a  huge  difference  in  my  life,  health,  lifestyle  and  mindset.  I  had  been  referred  to,  and  was  attending  a  diabetes  clinic  at  Southmead  hospital  for  over  a  year  but  the  specialist  decided  to  discharge  me  and  return  me  to  my  local  surgery  as  he  had  noticed  my  condition  to  improve.  In  a  nutshell,  I  shed  the  weight  that  I  didn’t  need,  reduced  the  quantity  of  insulin  I  took  by  half  and  simply  felt  better  in  my  self-­‐esteem.  Thus,  I  felt  that  the  contact  with  Heba  was  undoubtedly  helpful.  I  have  not  been  able  to  continue  seeing  her  due  to  my  regular  travels  abroad  but  I  have  continued  to  be  mindful  of  the  foods  I  eat  and  in  what  regularity  as  advised  by  her.  I  would  therefore  not  hesitate  in  recommending  Heba  to  anyone  who  is  in  a  similar  or  remotely  closer  the  situation  I  was  in  before  meeting  Heba.  I  also  feel  that  had  I  been  referred  by  the  NHS  to  her  or  Nutritionists  of  similar  standing  to  her,  rather  than  to  the  two  separate  dieticians  I  saw  under  the  NHS  who  simply  confirmed  that  I  was  doing  ok  with  my  day-­‐to-­‐day  diets,  I  would  have  seen  the  improvement  even  earlier.

The current world we live in expects youth and assumes that we do not age. There is a cheap, easy and a safe way to stay young and that is by exercise. Researchers have stated that by being physically active you could reduce your biological age by anything from 10 to 20 years. Physically active 60 and 70 year olds were found to have the same cardiopulmonary fitness as sedentary 20 year olds. Those active elders were found to be twice as fit as sedentary people of the same age. And what makes this so appealing is how little exercise it takes to realize the benefits. A recreational one hour a day was all it took.

Adding healthy years to your life span

Being biologically younger also means that you may live longer. This is backed up by research which showed that subjects who burnt 2,000 calories a week (this is equivalent to running or walking 3 miles a day) were up to a third lower than sedentary counterparts. Using innovative analysis of computer data led researchers to conclude that a healthy lifestyle including regular exercise starting at the age of 30, may potentially add 15 years to life expectancy. Another study showed that when subjects were asked to stay in bed for 3 weeks their aerobic capacity aged by the equivalent of 20 years. Exercising however needs to be regular with a frequency of at least 3 times a week. Such a commitment will make you feel younger, work harder and enjoy life more. Research has demonstrated that aerobic exercises such as swimming, running, cycling and walking are the most effective anti-ageing weapons. This is because of their demand for more oxygen which fuels the body cells and allows them to perform at their best. It will also allow you to think and move faster.

The anti-aging effects of exercise may be enhanced by other healthy lifestyle changes such as making wise nutrition choices. As we age we lose lean muscle and to rebuild it we need both exercise and nutrition. For exercise to be effective, you need to re-generate your body cells, repair the damaged ones and feed the healthy ones to keep them healthy. All of this should be done at the cellular level and can be achieved by cellular nutrition.  Furthermore, there are medical indicators for conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol that have a tendency to deteriorate as we age. Reversing such a tendency which effectively means turning the clock back will require a nutritional intervention. Medical advice is paramount in these cases and I can work with you on monitoring progress. As we age, our bodies create higher levels of homocysteine. These raised levels can significantly increase vulnerability to cardiovascular disease, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis and certain forms of cancer. Again, to reverse this particular ageing effect we need a diet rich in Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12 and folic acid. Also, when cells age their telomeres shorten, to reverse this ageing effect a diet rich in Omega-3 is needed. Cooking choices such as types of cooking oil and cooking methods can dramatically improve the nutritional value of your meal. All of these choices and many more are covered in the various topics of the WLC that I run.

To summarize

Physical activity beats aging and will make you feel younger. It will also add years of quality living to your life. So make it part of your life and learn to enjoy it for the good it will do you. With that you need to make healthy nutrition choices to enhance the benefits of physical activity for a younger looking body and spirit.

Do not let the lifestyle change daunt you. Start with a weekly brisk walk then slowly increase the frequency to daily. It is an effective start that will give you anti-aging benefits and put you in a good condition for more rigorous activities such as swimming and running. March 2014 sees the launch of my brand new Nutrition and Wellness Centre Cookery School in Bath, offering fun, friendly, healthy cookery classes.
Since opening my centre two years ago, I’ve helped a huge number of clients lose weight and learn the benefits of good nutrition. However, my motivation for starting the Cookery School is that time and again clients tell me they want to eat well but simply don’t know what to cook. When faced with a list of the individual healthy foods they should be eating they cannot combine them to make a nutritious, and more importantly, tasty meal. They get discouraged, they get bored … they give up!
In my Happy Healthy Cookery Classes, I’ll show you that eating well is easy and can be just as tasty and exciting as eating badly. Classes will comprise a maximum of 10 students, will last 4 hours and will include the demonstration and preparation of a three course healthy meal. We will then sit down together and share the meal. My kitchen is bright and cheerful and you will be assured of a very warm welcome.
The classes will not only cover the cookery demonstration but will also include information about the tools needed to stock a ‘healthy kitchen’. In my home country of Saudi the food is all about exciting taste, so we will learn about simple ingredients which add delicious flavour to any dish. We will cover store cupboard and freezer ingredients – items to always have in stock so you can quickly prepare a simple nutritious meal.
Students will leave the class armed with full tummies, recipe sheets and healthy cooking know how they can use every day for the rest of their lives to keep their weight down and their bodies strong and working well.
And once you’ve learned how to cook I’ll help you put it into practice too. Every student will be individually invited to join me for a cup of tea at my centre where we can discuss your health, your lifestyle and how improving your nutrition could benefit you.

Bath CobraFIT


What is Bath CobraFIT?

CobraFIT® is more than just a workout. It's all about the right workout in combination with the right nutrition to get you into the best shape of your life. CobraFIT is a High Intensity, Interval and Resistance Training work-out. It appeals to a wide range of participants of all ages and abilities. In just 40 minutes you will torch fat, build fitness and stamina, along with lean muscle. Expect to burn over 500 calories per session, plus experience incredible after-burn of calories with up to 70% from fat stores.

What is HIIRT?
HIIRT stands for High Intensity Interval Resistance Training.
It employs the same alternating periods of HIIT (High Intensity Interva Training) with short, high intensity exercise withshort duraton recovery periods to create fitness adaptations - adding in a weight as an additional resistance.

- Warm-up stretches

- Warm-down stretches
